Hearing Help for TV

Having trouble hearing the TV?  Well,  the answer is “yes” for pretty much anyone who has hearing loss.  But a nifty app called Tunity may be a big help.  It delivers television audio right to your hearing aids via your smart phone.  To do that you will need hearing aids that are equipped with bluetooth.

Using the app is pretty simple.  You open it up, and take a picture of the television screen to capture a frame of the program you’re watching. The app then delivers the soundtrack to your hearing aids.

The program’s soundtrack is sourced from the company’s servers so you can hear it even if the tv’s sound is muted.  That also means that sometimes it may be slightly out of sync but the app includes an adjustment feature to correct that if necessary.

I was watching the World Cup in a crowded, noisy bar but was able to use Tunity to clearly hear the commentary.  It’s also useful for hearing the home tv without having to crank up the volume, or maybe late at night you can watch with the sound muted.

Tunity does have its limitations.  Right now it only with works with live network programs in the United States.  Although it also works in Canada with U.S. network shows that are simulcast.

That said I found Tunity to be very useful, it’s free and available here: Apple’s  App Store or at Google Play.
